APPENNIN PASS SECURING

Today the intervention on Passo Serra has begun. In particular on the crests of Nasseto, made of friable rock, called „greta“ that slipping downstream and being subjected to deep incisions from rainwater and runoff, makes it difficult to pass even on foot. So much so that, for safety, we have so far recommended a fairly long and less panoramic detour. The passage of Nasseto and Passo Serra is one of the most beautiful stages of the Via Romea Germanica. Mirabile is the old mule track, perhaps of Roman origin, which until the beginning of the last century was the only passage between Romagna and Tuscany. The new Mandrioli, Calla, Muraglione, Cavallino passes were not built… The mule track certainly was traveled by pilgrims (two tombs were found under the remains of an oratory, located near on Passo Serra), by merchants and also from armies, like the Lanzichenecchi of the Constable of Bourbon, headed for the Sack of Rome. Apart from the safety measures, it would be nice, from the historical, cultural, environmental and naturalistic point of view, to recover the ridge of this mule track. A stonework that strenuously resists where there is a background of sandstone and marl-resistant rocks, but which has disappeared where it rested on the clayey marls commonly called “greta”. We thanks to the MIT Ministry that gave the funding, to the Region, to the Union of Valle Savio Municipalities, to the Consorzio di Bonifica (Land Reclamation Consortium): all of them have worked for this project of broad prospects.
