Stage 30 – Chitignano-Subbiano – Short and easy stage that leads us towards the Arno. The Tuscan hills are now the normal view, rich in woods, cultivated meadows, farmhouses and castles.

After leaving Chitignano, trying to avoid the provincial road by following the parallel streets to the left, you arrive at the Castello degli Ubertini: a recommended visit. You go down (cyclists follow the road towards Poggio d’Acona), up to an iron cross and you reach Poggio d’Acona, after passing three fords in a thick wood. The picturesque village, also once the Ubertini Castle, stretches along a buttress of the Alpe di Catenaia. Once you have filled up with water at the spring in the center of the town, you follow the road up to the Rio Talla. Crossing the stream you reach the Castello di Valenzano. Taking a country road, crossing the Rio della Torre, continue up to the Fosso Romaggio. After crossing the stream, you reach the road that descends from Vogognano. You follow a nice track in the middle of fields and woods. After a ford you meet Giuliano. (cyclists take the road that descends towards the SR Umbro Casentinese Romagnola or SS 71, up to Subbiano). Just over 1 km and you ford the Rio Lendra; at the Candepole farm you can supply yourself with water. Arriving on the road that descends from Falciano, after several crossroads, after passing a ditch, following other cart roads, you go towards Subbiano. Underpassed the SS 71 you are near the Town Hall of Subbiano. Then the fortress-castle of Subbiano, just above the Arno and in front of nearby Capolona.

30 – Points of Interest

Subbiano – In the first years of the 11th century a document was found in which the territory of Subbiano is mentioned as belonging to the bishops of Arezzo. Then, in 1384, Subbiano submitted to the Florentine Republic. On the facade of the Palazzo della Podesteria Fiorentina, there are many coats of arms in stone. Subbiano is on the left of the Arno, with the municipality of Capolona on the right of the river. Worth seeing: the Church of Santa Maria della Visitazione, with an elegant loggia on the façade and a high bell tower; and the small but interesting Giano Archaeological Museum, where artefacts from the Roman and Medieval periods discovered in the territory of Subbiano are conserved. CAPOLONA This was once “Campus Leonis”, then it became a castle, capital of the community, and the seat of a parish on the right bank of the Arno, not far from Arezzo. Standing in the green of the surrounding countryside is the Parish Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Sietina, a small Romanesque church with three naves, documented since the 11th century and full of frescoes from the Arezzo school dating from 1370 to the beginning of the 15th century.

Capolona – It was once “Campus Leonis”, then it became a castle, capital of the community and seat of Pieve on the right bank of the Arno, not far from Arezzo. In the green surrounding countryside stands the Pieve di Santa Maria Maddalena in Sietina, a small Romanesque church with three naves documented as early as the 11th century, rich in frescoes of the Arezzo school dating from 1370 to the early 15th century.

Castle of Valenzano – It predates the 10th century. The first nucleus was built in the late period of the Lombard rule, between the end of the 1st and the beginning of the 10th century, as a watchtower. It is thought that, in Etruscan times, the tower was a garrison along the Via del Sale. The castle is accessed through a characteristic gate and it develops around an internal cloister. After the Lombards and the Franks, the history of Valenzano already merged with that of Arezzo at the beginning of the 13th century. After the defeat of Arezzo in 1289 at Campaldino against the Guelphs of Florence, Valenzano suffered raids and violence from the winners. To this day, the Castle of Valenzano has kept intact the austere architecture of its walls, battlements and towers. After admiring the beauty of the castle, you will be able to stay in its rooms, with their old-world charm.
