Stage 41 – Montefiascone-Viterbo. From Montefiascone, after the “Monument to the Pilgrim” another not long stage starts, through the paving of the Cassia, the paths and routes among the hills. Viterbo, the “City of Popes”, welcomes with its charm. There are country lanes with parts in paving; you also pass through the Baths of Bagnaccio before reaching the Palazzo dei Papi in Viterbo
41 – Points of Interest
The Via Cassia is an ancient Roman consular road that connected Rome with Etruria. Built starting from the 3rd or 2nd century BC, it initially reached Chiusi; then it was extended up to Cortona, Arezzo and subsequently, towards the Tyrrhenian coast. The route is made up of numerous variants that have overlapped over the centuries. In the Middle Ages its first sixty-four miles – from Rome (Ponte Milvio) to Bolsena coincided with a stretch of the Via Francigena and the Via Romea Germanica. The Cassia then crossed the territory of Veio, Sutri and Vetralla. Continuing in southern Etruria (Tuscia), it reached Viterbo, Montefiascone, Orvieto
Viterbo. The name of Viterbo comes from the Latin Vetus Urbs, meaning “Old Town”. It is essentially a medieval center surrounded by walls dating back to 1095, with two main gates (Florentine and Roman). There are archaeological and thermal areas (Bullicame, sulphurous water). Worth mentioning is Ferento, an archaeological site on the Teverina road and the Roman theater. The University of Tuscia is based there. Viterbo is known as the “City of Popes”: in the thirteenth century it was in fact the papal seat and for about 24 years. The Papal Palace hosted or were elected various Popes. Also noteworthy is the Palazzo dei Priori. The necropolis of Castel d’Asso is an archaeological site that collects Etruscan tombs, probably dating back to the 4th-2nd century BC. Worth noting: Cathedral of San Lorenzo, next to the Palazzo dei Papi; the medieval quarter of San Pellegrino, the Church of Santa Maria Nuova, one of the oldest in the city.
National Etruscan Museum of Rocca Albornoz. Located in an elegant architectural setting, it preserves finds of extreme beauty but above all of considerable scientific / archaeological value.
