Stage 44 – Sutri-Campagnano – Simple stage, which crosses the countryside. The whole is a beautiful nature trail.
Leaving Sutri, you go down to the park in front of the Roman theater; cross the area in front and climb the hill overlooking the Etruscan tombs. After a path where there are hazelnut groves, you come to the Vallicella farm. Then the locality of San Martino, a series of golf courses and after a few kilometers you reach Monterosi. You enter the park of the Treja river valley with the Monte Gelato waterfalls. Crossing the river and leaving the Vallelunga racetrack, you arrive in Campagnano.
44 – Points of Interest
Monterosi – All gathered around its central nucleus, it had, in the past, important strategic functions. The passage of the Via Cassia favored economic and cultural exchanges with the rest of Etruria and this allowed Monterosi – and other neighboring towns – to improve culturally and economically. Naturally, for the same reason, Monterosi was also the victim of numerous sieges and looting: Romans, Goths and Lombards passed through Monterosi. Initially located on the hill that currently overlooks it, around 1400, in a period of relative calm, the center moved downstream. Monterosi is remembered in history books because it was the scene of memorable events: in 1155 it was the place chosen by Pope Adrian IV to meet Frederick Barbarossa who was to be crowned emperor. Barbarossa refused, on that occasion, to hold the stirrup to the Pontiff who had to ride on horseback. To see: Church of Santa Croce, Cardinal’s Palace.
Campagnano Di Roma – The town stands on a hill of tufaceous rock, surrounded by natural gorges, on the hills that form the slopes of theBaccano Valley. After the defeat of the Etruscan city of Veio, the territory of Campagnano was the scene of clashes between the Etruscans and the Romans. With the beginning of the 3rd century BC the repopulation of the area began, which in 241 BC became part of the Roman domain. The imperial age saw a period of intense population and settlement, parallel to the renewed interest in northern Etruria and the Via Cassia. In the Baccano Valley, an ancient volcanic crater in the municipal area of Campagnano di Roma, filled in ancient times by a swamp and subsequently drained and reclaimed, is the Mansio in Vacanas, a post station for the refreshment of travelers and the change of horses. In fact, the Baccano Valley is located along the route of the Via Francigena and Romea out of Rome.
Monte Gelato Waterfalls – They are among the most famous and popular in Lazio. Placed in the heart of the Treja Valley Regional Park, they create one of the most beautiful natural paintings in the region, so much so that they are repeatedly used as a set for commercials and films. Many small waterfalls form a small “lake” with almost calm waters. The dense vegetation and the clear waters give coolness; it is a reserve of high environmental and ecological value.
